Project 4: Musical Interpretation – Rock ‘n’ Roll

January 20, 2010

Rock ‘n’ Rock is a genre of music started in the United States during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.

It’s a mix  of blues, country music, and gospel music.

In early Rock ‘n’ Roll, the piano or saxophone were usually the lead instruments. Guitar was later added in the 1950’s.

Classic Rock ‘n’ Roll is played with one or more electric guitars, a bass, and drums.

The term Rock ‘n’ Roll is credited to Cleveland, Ohio DJ Alan Freed. He broadcasted  rhythm, blues, and country music  toward a more diverse audience. He used the term to describe the music he aired.

I plan on using music from The Who. I thought of the Beetles, but I do prefer  The Who more.

The Who are a british rock band. They formed in 1964, and were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

Song: Baba o’Reily aka Teenage Wasteland by The Who

The song was written by Pete Townshend and sang mostly by Roger Daltry, but Pete Townshend does sing in a part of the song.

It’s also known as Teenage Wasteland, because of the repeating of the words in the song.

The title of the song is a tribute to the song’s philosophical and musical influences: Meher Baba and Terry Riley.

It was originally written for Townshend’s Lifehouse project, but when that did not work out, it was released on The Who’s 1971 album Who’s Next.

The violin solo in the coda of the song is a homage to Meher Baba.

__________________________________________________________

For my compositions, I want to tell a story that goes with the beat of the music. I’m still brainstorming in my head of what kind of story I want to tell.

I think I might just create a “cute” character. While I do want a little bit of texture in it, I think overall color would be more important. I want to use a broad range of colors for the compositions and later in the video as well.

______________________________________________________________

I want to use more solid colors in the video. I’m not really sure about textures yet  but in the beginning composition I want colors to be duller and become brighter as it goes.

Project 3: Changes to be made

November 18, 2009

I’ll be making them go in an order of Long shot, medium shot, close up, medium shot, and long shot to make the images flow better together.

I’ll be keeping the black & white image as well as the expressive close to the same. I might have to change the wolf in the black in white one.

I’ll be turning my cubism one into a broken mirror laying in the snow in the the more rural area of town.

For my OP Art one, i think i might go back to my original idea. the original idea has more of a medium shot so it will flow better with the others. Plus it might be more interesting of a composition than the current one posted.

I need to change the perspective on my art nouveau one. I’ll  be redrawing the line work for it then color it in a rustic feel and have snow in it as well.

Project 3: All 5 Panels

November 17, 2009

My story continues on with the wolf wandering into the small town near the sea. He’ll explore a bit then quietly walk back out into the wilderness.

Urban and Rural

The original idea for Op Art didn’t turn out as well as I wanted. So I tossed the idea and pondered on a new one. The second idea for Op Art turned out a bit better. I wanted to achieve a  continuous movement pattern with a profile shot of the wolf. I think I might have to rework it a bit more, because the heads look a bit too big. The colors might make it a bit too Pop Art like.

I’m quite happy with how my Black & White and Expressive Line turned out. I had the most interesting time trying to get the perspective on the black and white. The Expressive was just fun to color. I think I looked at least 5 or more tutorials about brushes in Photoshop.

My Art Nouveau line drawing is having a few problems. The first house looks like it’s eating itself and the second house looks fine…maybe. The roof of the first house looks iffy too. I want to fix the perspective problems before I color it. It’s one of the line drawings that I had more fun with.

I don’t even know what to say for Cubism. I really don’t.

Project 3: Revised Panels

November 11, 2009

Black and White: I varied the line weight a bit. It looks better to me. I’ll paint it this weekend with ink wash.

BlackNWhite

Expressive Line: Played with Colored Lines? It looks like it’s painted instead… I used the brush used for outlines from nibbledpencil.com. I may have found my new favorite brush!

Project 3: First 2 Extend Panels

November 4, 2009

First Panel: Black & White

I didn’t want to paint this yet, because I think the perspective could be off still. Would love some feedback about the perspective and how to possibly fix it.

Second Panel: Expressive Line

I wanted to play with the line weight on a side profit shot of the wolf.

Project 3: Idea

November 4, 2009

Story:

I’ll be extending my story from the point where it ended with the wolf on the cliff.

The two words I got are Rural and Urban

Tupit has decided to explore the town below him.

1. Black & White or Natural to Expressive Color:

The first shot will simply establish that he’s in the small town now. I think I’m going to go with a simple black and white image. The medium I plan on using for this one will be black ink. It will be like a watercolor painting.

2. Florescent Pigments:

I’m leaning towards OP Art mostly in this one. The idea of tricking the eye into seeing something different seems more interesting to me. My first idea was to have a play on reflection. Kind of like M.C Escher’s hand holding the orb piece in my references. However, when I talked to Charlotte,  she mentioned that I should look at the “rules” of OP Art instead of the works of art. She gave the idea of having the wolf be sneaking pass a window and having all of the squares covering him. I think I’ll play with the idea more to find a composition I like.

3. Transparency:

Cubism requires multiple views and transparency. In order to show the more rural side of town, I’ll have the wolf walk pass a broken window or a broken mirror with his reflection broken into multiple sections on the glass.

4. Metallics:

I really want to do an art nouveau inspired building. The composition might be a bit to similar to the B&W one so I’m still playing with ideas on this one.

5. Expressive Line.

I plan on doing a profile design of the wolf. This design will be more modern because it will be more crisp and clean. I think I might use some select chromatic coloring on it.
